Timothy Wood is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the tension between the organic and the surreal. Wood builds his images slowly and meticulously through hundreds — sometimes thousands — of translucent glazes. This layered process yields luminous surfaces and dreamlike forms that oscillate between natural realism and psychological abstraction.
Rooted in a fascination with symbolic gesture, transformation, and archetype, Wood’s compositions often evoke otherworldly botanicals, ambiguous anatomies, or beings in states of emergence. His visual language draws from the subconscious in ways that invite open interpretation — not as puzzles to solve, but as states to inhabit. Movement, tension, and stillness live in close proximity.
Influenced by the detailed surrealism of Salvador Dalí, Yves Tanguy, and the biomorphic poetics of Max Ernst, Wood has developed a voice that is at once technically rigorous and emotionally intuitive. His paintings reference the natural world without replicating it — instead, he uses its rhythms to create internal landscapes where growth, decay, and revelation intermingle.
Wood often works on multiple pieces simultaneously, allowing each to evolve over time. This process-oriented approach mirrors the organic systems he paints: evolving, adaptive, and layered with invisible histories.
Wood studied graphic design, illustration, and fine art at Ringling College of Art and Design, and he brings a refined sense of structure and spatial awareness to his painting practice. Since 1984, his work has been shown in galleries throughout the United States and is held in numerous private collections. He has received awards recognizing both his technical craft and conceptual depth.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Each work is original and intentional. I’m a painter and mixed media artist working in the arenas of surrealism, abstract expressionism, realism, fantasy, and abstraction. My process includes a variety of methods and materials, including oils, acrylics, and reverse painting on acrylic sheets. Most of my work is done by glazing (multiple thin, transparent layers to achieve rich and deep colors) and most often, whatever it takes to achieve the desired effect.
I am especially attracted to the work of Dalí, Tanguy, Magritte, and Miró. I don’t try to explain my art or assign it meaning—what matters to me is that it makes you feel something or question what you see. Whether it stirs a memory, triggers an emotion, or simply draws you in, viewing or experiencing original art is personal and unfiltered as each person will interpret it uniquely based on their lives. Rather than define meaning, I hope to evoke something visceral.
